YALSA announces 2023 William C. Morris finalists

CHICAGO – The Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA), a division of the American Library Association (ALA), selected five books as finalists for the 2023 William C. Morris Award, which honors the year’s best books written for young adults by a previously unpublished author. YALSA will name the Morris Award winner at the Youth Media Awards on Jan. 30, 2023, during ALA’s LibLearnX: The Library Learning Experience.

YALSA Announces 2023 Excellence in Nonfiction for Young Adults Award finalists

CHICAGO - The Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA), a division of the American Library Association (ALA), selected five books as finalists for the 2023 Excellence in Nonfiction for Young Adults Award, which awards the best in nonfiction published for young adults ranging in age from 12 through 18 years, highlighting excellence in writing, research, presentation and readability for young adults.

Karleen Delaurier-Lyle Named a 2023 Core Emerging Leader

CHICAGO—Core: Leadership, Infrastructure, Futures is pleased to announce that Karleen Delaurier-Lyle has been selected as a Core Emerging Leader (EL). Delaurier-Lyle serves as the Information Services Librarian at The University of British Columbia, Vancouver Campus where she focuses on indigenous librarianship, library instruction, reference services, and critical indigenous literacy.

Rachel Wells Selected as a 2023 Core Emerging Leader

CHICAGO—Core: Leadership, Infrastructure, Futures is pleased to announce that Rachel Wells has been chosen as a Core Emerging Leader (EL). Wells works as the Reference Librarian at the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in Cooperstown, New York where she is responsible for answering reference questions related to all facets of baseball. She also works on collection development.

"I am humbled to be selected for the ALA Emerging Leaders Class of 2023," Wells said. "I'm ecstatic to work other members and to see what we can accomplish for ALA!"

Alexander Dodd Chosen as a 2023 Core Emerging Leader

CHICAGO—Core: Leadership, Infrastructure, Futures is pleased to announce that Alexander Dodd has been named as a Core Emerging Leader (EL). Currently working as the Continuing Resources Librarian at the University Libraries at the University of Maryland in College Park, MD, Dodd's areas of focus in libraries include open access and scholarly publishing.

"I'm very honored to have been chosen for the class of 2023, says Dodd. "I'm so excited to start working with all the other members of this year's cohort on some interesting and important topics facing the library world." 

American Library Association to Host Inaugural Governance Institute at 2023 LibLearnX

CHICAGO — The American Library Association (ALA) will host its first-ever ALA Governance Institute during the 2023 LibLearnX (LLX) in New Orleans, La. Held on Friday, January 27 from 8 a.m. to noon, this new program will provide insights into critical issues related to effective governance, beginning with a focus on strategic communications and financial analysis and stewardship in workshops available exclusively to LLX registrants.

ALA President Pelayo-Lozada announces travel grant for LibLearnX 2023

ALA President Lessa Kanani’opua Pelayo-Lozada announces a travel grant for underemployed library workers to attend the Library Learning Experience (LibLearnX) on January 27-30, 2023, in New Orleans, LA. The grant will cover the expenses of two underemployed library workers from underrepresented groups (American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian, Black/African American, Hispanic/Latino, Middle Eastern and North African, Native Hawaiian/Other Pacific Islander, 2SLGBTQIA+, a person with a disability) whose employment status has changed to part-time or less since January 2021.

Kathy Carroll, Sara Dallas to serve on ALA Executive Board

CHICAGO - The American Library Association (ALA) Council has elected Kathy Carroll and Sara Dallas to serve on the ALA Executive Board. The Executive Board election took place during the virtual 2022 Library Learning Experience. Elected board members will begin a three-year term beginning in July 2022 and concluding in June 2025.

ALA begins a new tradition with the first-ever LibLearnX

CHICAGO — The American Library Association (ALA) hosted the first LibLearnX: The Library Learning Experience (LLX) conference online, Jan. 21-24, 2022. LibLearnX is a completely new conference experience, built from the ground up based on years of research, exploration, and most importantly, input from library professionals. The 2022 conference was intentionally designed as a benefit for ALA Members, with an opportunity to learn, network, and celebrate. The event attracted 2,100+ participants and 66 exhibiting organizations.
