Libraries Ready to Code Opens Call for Applications: Virtual Learning and Enhancement Grants

Today, the American Library Association (ALA) opened applications for Virtual Learning and Enhancement Grants of $1,000 available for 90 school, tribal, public, and academic libraries. In response to increased demand for technical skills to lead and participate in virtual education during the COVID-19 health emergency, the Virtual Learning and Enhancement Grants focus on digital skill development of library staff and patrons. Applications are due Thursday, September 17, 2020.

The Public Library Association and Microsoft announce initiative to help expand internet access in rural communities during COVID-19 crisis

CHICAGO — The Public Library Association (PLA) and Microsoft Corp. announced a new initiative today to increase access to technology in rural communities during the COVID-19 crisis. Microsoft will provide funding to help public libraries in rural communities extend WiFi access by installing public WiFi access points on or near library grounds.

Libraries Ready to Code Awards Microfunding on Digital Learning Day

Today the American Library Association’s (ALA) Libraries Ready to Code initiative, sponsored by Google, awarded more than 100 academic, school and public libraries with $700 mini-grants to encourage digital skills education in honor of Digital Learning Day, February 27, 2020.

Course on popular YouTube added to PLA’s DigitalLearn.org website

CHICAGO — The Public Library Association (PLA) has released a new online tutorial to help patrons learn the basics of using the popular online video site, YouTube. The course, Intro to Searching Videos on YouTube, covers the basics of searching for videos for entertainment, instruction, “do it yourself,” and more. This 21-minute online tutorial explores how one navigates the YouTube homepage, how to perform searches, and how to create an account.
