PLA releases 'Strategic Planning for Public Libraries' publication

CHICAGO — The Public Library Association (PLA) has released a new book, "Strategic Planning for Public Libraries," addressing the key areas of strategic planning that public library professionals care about most. This instructional publication provides a framework that libraries of all sizes can use as a basis for their strategic planning. The content is supported by research conducted across more than 200 public library professionals and in-depth interviews with more than 20 library directors and leaders throughout the country.

Public library professionals who are experienced in strategic planning or just beginning will find the publication a useful blend of broad strategy as well as content tailored for public libraries. Topics covered include:

• creating a living strategic plan that can be continually updated;

• engaging the community;

• engaging staff;

• conducting a community assessment;

• reaching non-users; and

• measuring progress against the strategic plan.

“A well-developed strategic plan is an essential tool to help any organization from doing too much, and it seeks to provide the focus every organization needs in decision-making,” said Stephanie Chase, executive director of the Libraries of Eastern Oregon and PLA board member from 2017-2023. “Luckily, PLA’s Strategic Planning for Public Libraries is here to guide you through the process. This is a book that provides the resources and best practices needed to achieve a plan that not only shapes the future of the library, but also helps deepen the library’s understanding of and connection to the community it serves.”

Strategic Planning for Public Libraries is available as an eBook or print/eBook bundle. Each purchase also comes with downloadable, supplemental materials, including reusable templates, worksheets, and real-life examples to help guide the reader through the strategic planning process. The eBook is available for purchase and download in the ALA Store for $40.50 for ALA members and $45.00 for others. The print/eBook bundle is available in the ALA Store for $49.50 for ALA members and $55.00 for others.
