CHICAGO—The Association for Library Collections & Technical Services (ALCTS) announces that Magda El-Sherbini is the recipient of the 2015 Margaret Mann Citation presented by its Cataloging and Metadata Management Section (CaMMS). The Mann Citation will be presented at the ALCTS Awards Ceremony at the American Library Association Annual Conference and Exhibition in San Francisco, June 27, 2015.

The Mann Citation, recognizing outstanding professional achievement in cataloging or classification, includes a $2,000 scholarship donated in the recipient’s honor by OCLC, Inc. to the library school of the winner’s choice.  Magda has chosen that it be split between two library schools, her alma mater, the Catholic University of America’s Department of Library and Information Science, and Kent State University, School of Library and Information Science, where she is currently an adjunct professor.

Magda’s accomplishments to the library profession are numerous. Her dedication is reflected in her outstanding contributions in teaching, research, and service. Her most recent publication, "RDA: Strategies for Implementation," received excellent reviews and numerous citations. It is used in many library school programs that instruct the new cataloging standard. One of the supporting letters notes, “Ms. El-Sherbini is passionate about sharing her knowledge of cataloging and technical service issues with the next generation of library professionals.” It is evident that she has an outstanding record as adjunct professor at Kent State University’s School of Library and Information Science where she is known for her ability to engage her students in an active or virtual classroom environment.

She is actively involved with numerous professional organizations and committees on all levels: international, national, state, and local. Her publications, research, presentations, teaching, and active service are outstanding. Involved with ALCTS for decades, Magda has been on various committees in the roles of member, chair, and editorial board member. Particularly noteworthy is her outstanding contribution as chair of the ALCTS Steering Committee to Oversee the Implementation of the Non-English Task Force Recommendation. Her contribution to this group was acknowledged with the 2009 ALCTS President’s Citation.

Since 1996, Magda has worked as the Head of the Cataloging Department at The Ohio State University Libraries. In this capacity, she oversees the department’s cataloging activities. She supervises the department's four cataloging units as well as four faculty members and their respective staffs.

The Association for Library Collections & Technical Services is the national association for information providers who work in collections and technical services, such as acquisitions, cataloging, metadata, collection management, preservation, electronic and continuing resources. ALCTS is a division of the American Library Association.
