New ALA Editions Workshop challenges you to radically rethink the library collection

CHICAGO - ALA Editions announces an exciting new workshop, Patron-Driven Acquisition: Radically Rethinking the Collection with Rick Anderson.

Managing an academic library collection amidst the ever-changing mix of formats and purchasing options is enough to overwhelm even seasoned librarians. In this ALA Editions Workshop, respected collection development and management expert Rick Anderson invites you to step back and revisit fundamental assumptions about the purpose of the academic library collection. The concept of Patron-Driven Acquisition (PDA) is an attractive alternative: in a largely digital information environment, library users can find and identify desired content, which the library will then purchase for their use. Anderson will introduce the ideas behind Patron-Driven Acquisition, familiarizing you with its numerous manifestations.



Topics include:

• A summary of the seismic impact of the digital information revolution on the creation, acquisition, storage and distribution of the library collection
• The tension between libraries’ roles in the preservation and timely access of materials
• The erosion of the collection impulse, including the ramifications of approval plans, journal packages and e-book packages
• Analysis of the five common varieties of Patron-Driven Acquisition
• How to control your budget when the patron is selecting

Registration for this ALA Editions Workshop is available on the ALA Store. Registration is available at both individual and group rates. The workshop takes place in two 90-minute sessions on Wednesdays, Oct. 5 and 26, 2011 at 2:30 p.m. EDT/1:30 p.m. CDT/12:30 p.m. MDT/11:30 a.m. PDT. The session will last 90 minutes.

Rick Anderson is associate director for scholarly resources and collections at the University of Utah’s Marriott Library. Known as an advocate for Patron-Driven Acquisition, he is a regular contributor to the blog Scholarly Kitchen and writes an occasional op-ed column for Against the Grain titled “In My Humble (But Correct) Opinion.” He worked previously as a bibliographer for YBP, Inc., as head acquisitions librarian for the University of North Carolina, Greensboro and as director of resource acquisition at the University of Nevada, Reno. In 2008, he was elected president of the North American Serials Interest Group, and he was named an ARL Research Library Leadership Fellow for 2009-10.
