CHICAGO — Teens face difficult situations every day, and librarians need the tools to help support young adults through the tricky adolescent years. Topics like sexuality, abuse, privacy and others can be difficult for librarians to address with teens or their parents and caregivers.

To help librarians navigate delicate matters, the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) will offer a full-day preconference, “It’s Perfectly Normal: Dealing with ‘Sensitive’ Topics in Teen Services” at the ALA Annual Conference in Washington, D.C. You do not need to register for ALA Annual Conference to attend this workshop. Tickets for the preconference cost $195 for YALSA members, $235 for ALA members and $285 for nonmembers.

Experts in the field of adolescent development, along with authors and librarians, will discuss how they have managed to successfully maneuver this difficult landscape. Participants will explore strategies for collection development, services and programming relating to these sensitive issues. Speakers for the preconference include authors Ben Saenz, Laurie Halse Anderson, Nina LaCour, David Levithan and Ellen Hopkins.

If you wish to register for this event without registering for Annual, you can download the form to mail or fax in (ignore part I) at
