PSA Alert

For Immediate Release

February 11, 2010

CHICAGO – Tom Kenny, best known as the voice of SpongeBob SquarePants, appears in downloadable public service announcements (PSAs) promoting Teen Tech Week, March 7 – 13, 2010. Teen Tech Week is an annual initiative sponsored by the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA).

The broadcast-quality PSAs featuring Kenny are available for download at, as are PSA scripts provided by YALSA.

The Kenny PSAs are provided by Teen Tech Week Promotional Partner Galaxy Press.

Aimed at librarians, educators, parents and other concerned adults, to Teen Tech Week encourages teens to take advantage of libraries' nonprint resources. The 2010 theme — Learn Create Share @ your library — fosters teen creativity and positions the library as a physical and virtual place for safe exploration of the many types of technology available at libraries, including DVDs, music, gaming, video production, online homework help, social networking, tech workshops, audiobooks and more.

Why air Teen Tech Week PSAs? Studies indicate that young people are adept at downloading their favorite songs from the Internet or instant messaging with their friends, but the majority lacks the critical thinking and information literacy skills needed to use online resources successfully for school and informational purposes. To gain the skills necessary to compete in today's networked world, teens need access to digital and online information — as well as trained professionals who can help them use these resources effectively, efficiently and ethically.
