CHICAGO— The ALA 2010 Boston Sunrise Speaker Series will include Dr. Atul Gawande, writer and surgeon. Join us on Sunday morning, Jan. 17, 8 to 9 a.m. at the Boston Sunrise Speaker Series to hear Dr.Gawande, writer and surgeon, talk about his most recent book, the New York Times best seller,
Better: A Surgeon's Notes on Performance.
The series is part of the ALA Midwinter Meeting held in Boston. MA. from Jan. 15-19, 2010, and will be held Saturday and Sunday morning from 8 to 9 a.m and Monday morning from 9 to 10 a.m.
Gawande’s previous book, “Complications: A Surgeon's Notes on an Imperfect Science,” was a finalist for the National Book Award in 2002. He has written a new book, “The Checklist Manifesto” (Metropolitan Books), that will be released January, 2010.
Gawande is a staff member of the Brigham and Women's Hospital, the Dana Farber Cancer Institute and the New Yorker magazine. He served as a senior health policy advisor in the Clinton presidential campaign and at the White House from 1992 to 1993. He is an associate professor of surgery at Harvard Medical School, associate professor in the Department of Health Policy and Management at the Harvard School of Public Health and the Research Director for the BWH Center for Surgery and Public Health. He is the director of the World Health Organization's Global Challenge for Safer Surgical Care. In 2006, he received the MacArthur Award for his research and writing.
