CHICAGO — The Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA), a division of the American Library Association (ALA), will host two special events, including a full-day institute and a two-hour networking event, prior to ALA’s Midwinter Meeting in Boston. Full details on these events, and all of YALSA’s plans for Midwinter, are available online at
http://bit.ly/yalsamw2010.
YALSA’s pre-Midwinter Institute, Libraries 3.0: Teen Edition, will take place on Jan. 15. This face-to-face seminar offers librarians insight into enhancing existing services using online tools for today’s teens — the 30 million youth known as “digital natives.” Participants will explore the changing demographics of teens and how that will impact library services; recent research on how teens are using the Internet and Web-based tools for education and recreation; examples of successful programs that have incorporated innovative techniques for reaching and serving teens; the benefits of incorporating social networking and other technologies into existing teen programs; successful tactics for gaining funding and administrative support for technology-based programming and online services; and emerging technologies through hands-on interaction. Speakers include author Cory Doctorow (via Skype), acting California State Librarian and Futurist Stacy Aldrich and more. Tickets to Libraries 3.0 costs $195 for YALSA members, $235 for ALA members and $285 for nonmembers.
YALSA will also host Games, Gadgets and Gurus, a hands-on social event that provides an opportunity to network with other librarians, play games, try out gadgets like e-readers or video cameras and work one-on-one with a tech advisor. Refreshments included; tickets cost $40.
Those who register for both Libraries 3.0 and Games, Gadgets and Gurus will save $20 over paying for each separately. Registration is available through ALA’s Midwinter Meeting website at
www.ala.org/midwinter.
