CHICAGO –
ALA Editions, the publishing imprint of the American Library Association, is releasing  “
Moving Your Library: Getting the Collection from Here to There” by Steven Carl Fortriede, the complete kit for any librarian facing the daunting prospect of moving a library collection.Â

The task of moving collections of books and other materials can strain even the most organized professionals, as library facilities evolve to reflect changing demographics and use patterns. Author and experienced mover Fortriede’s book contains everything needed to get the job done quickly and efficiently with step-by-step directions, diagrams, spreadsheets and photos. Readers will learn:

  • How to plan a library move
  • Which method is best for a particular situation
  • How to recruit and train workers
  • What tools and supplies are needed

“Moving Your Library” also includes specifications for boxes, moving carts, sorting trays and a worksheet to calculate shelving layouts and growth rates—useful tools that would otherwise be easy to forget.

Fortriede retired as associate director of the Allen County Public Library in Fort Wayne, Indi., after more than 40 years in the library profession. Fortriede received a BS in education from Ball State University and an MLS from Western Michigan University in 1971. A year later he was assigned, rather abruptly, to move his first library. Since that time he has directed, or consulted for, more than 20 moves for libraries ranging from a few thousand to nearly 4 million items. He has also been responsible for many space planning and library design projects.

ALA Store purchases fund advocacy, awareness, and accreditation programs for library professionals worldwide.

ALA Editions develops resources for the library and information services community. Tens of thousands of librarians are helped and supported professionally each year by 30 or more new and revised titles. ALA authors are leaders across their fields, and their books are distributed and valued worldwide.
