CHICAGO - American Library Association (ALA) volunteers from across the United States will gather Friday, July 10 at McCormick Place for “Libraries Build Communities,” a daylong community service effort taking place at various school libraries throughout Chicago. Coordinated by the ALA Chapter Relations Office, this volunteer event is in conjunction with the ALA’s 2009 Annual Conference held July 9 – 15.

More than 100 volunteers will convene at 8 a.m. at McCormick Place,
Gate 41 located on East Cermak Road (E. 22nd Street) between Indiana Avenue and Prarie Avenue, to depart for nine separate work sites to help Chicago’s school libraries and the community. Volunteer duties will consist of shelving books, reorganizing, weeding, record entering, cataloging, cleaning and landscaping.

“Libraries Build Communities” volunteer work sites include:

  • Academy for Global Citizenship School, 4647 W. 47th, Chicago, 9 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
  • Crane Technical Prep High School, 2245 W. Jackson, Chicago, 9 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
  • George B. McClellan Elementary School, 3527 S. Wallace, Chicago, 9 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
  • James Russell Lowell Elementary School, 3320 W. Hirsh, Chicago, 9 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
  • Josiah L. Pickard Elementary School, 2301 W. 21st Place, Chicago, 9 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
  • McAuliffe Elementary School, 1841 N. Springfield, Chicago, 9 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
  • Robert Healy Elementary School, 3010 S. Parnell, Chicago, 9 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
  • Robert Healy Satellite Elementary School, 3040 S. Parnell, Chicago, 9 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
  • South Loop Elementary School, 1212 S. Plymouth, Chicago, 9 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
