CHICAGO - The American Library Association (ALA) has named Carol Ann Geary of Shrewsbury, Mass., the recipient of the 2009 Tom and Roberta Drewes Scholarship.
The scholarship is awarded to library support staff workers. The $3,000 award is to be applied toward the pursuit of a master’s degree in library and information science.
From a little girl waiting on the curb for the bookmobile to a distinguished library paraprofessional supporting her own family, Geary has dedicated her life and energy to libraries. For 30 years she has worked in school libraries and in youth and children’s departments in public libraries.
Geary, who in 2007 received the Massachusetts Library Association (MLA) Paralibrarian Level III Recognition of Achievement is involved in the MLA, where she serves on a conference committee. She is proud of the professional and volunteer experience she will bring to MLS studies, which she hopes will “expand my knowledge of library science and to complement my work as a librarian, particularly in the area of children’s service and outreach to underserved populations.”
Geary will attend Southern Connecticut University.
