CHICAGO - The American Library Association (ALA) has named Ryan David Stoops, Wichita, Kan., the 2009 recipient of the Marshall Cavendish Scholarship.

The $3,000 scholarship was established with a donation from the Marshall Cavendish Corporation in Tarrytown, N.Y., publishers of illustrated reference books for libraries. It is awarded to a person pursuing a master’s degree in library and information studies.

As a Marine studying Russian at the Defense Language Institute, Stoops discovered “a strong interest in languages and linguistics that persisted throughout my enlistment and the education that followed.” Later studies in Humanities and Western Civilization at the University of Kansas, and his own love of intellectual challenge, convinced him that his future lay in academia. “Simply put,” says Stoops, “I am passionate about putting information into my head and figuring out how to connect the bits together.”

Among his many accomplishments, military and academic, are membership of Dobro Slovo, the National Slavic Honor Society; the Defense Language Institute Marine Corps Commandant’s Award; and the Good Conduct Medal.

Stoops plans to specialize in Archives Studies and to hold a position in a university. To his chosen specialization, Archives Studies, he brings military discipline and intellectual curiosity.

Stoops will attend the Emporia State University in Emporia, Kan.
