Karen Schmidt, university librarian and professor at the Illinois Wesleyan University, Wendy Allen Shelburne, assistant professor and electronic resources librarian at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and David Vess, assistant professor and visiting IMLS portal librarian at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, have been awarded the 2009 Best of LRTS Award for the article, "Approaches to Selection, Access, and Collection Development in the Web world, " published in Library Resources & Technical Services (LRTS), volume 52, number 3, 2008, pages 184-191.
The Best of LRTS Award is given to the author(s) of the best paper published each year in LRTS, the official journal of the Association for Library Collections & Technical Services (ALCTS).Ã The authors receive $250 and a citation in recognition of their work.
The Schmidt, Shelburne and Vess article presents a case study on how collection development skills can be used to acquire, preserve and provide access to Web-based materials that complement the traditional collections acquired by major libraries. The authors explore the challenges of identifying the Web-based hate literature emanating from groups within the Midwest to enhance a special collection at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign library. The methodology selected was initially based on defining and identifying hate groups and exploring the Internet using manual and automated Web-crawling techniques to find relevant materials.
The article provides insight into creating and maintaining archives of materials created outside the publishing mainstream with traditional library collections. The authors urge librarians to adopt new approaches to collection development to insure the preservation of new types of information for the benefit of future researchers.
The award will be presented on Sunday, July 12, at the ALCTS Awards Ceremony during the 2008 American Library Association (ALA) Annual Conference in Chicago.
The Association for Library Collections & Technical Services (ALCTS) is the national association for information providers who work in collections and technical services, such as acquisitions, cataloging, collection development, preservation and continuing resources in digital and print formats.
