CHICAGO— Ruth A. Carr, a 20-year member of the Reference and User Services Association (RUSA) and the association’s History Section (HS), is the 2009 recipient of the Genealogical Publishing Company Award.

The award, administered RUSA HS and sponsored by Genealogical Publishing Company, presents a citation and $1,500 cash prize to a librarian, library or publisher who is a RUSA member and has demonstrated professional achievement in historical reference and research librarianship.

Carr, who serves as the Rose librarian for public service at the New York Public Library, was chosen for her longstanding service to RUSA and RUSA HS in a variety of roles. She has held the position of chief librarian for one of the county’s leading local history and genealogy collections: New York Public Library’s Irma and Paul Milstein Division of United States History, Local History and Genealogy. In this national role, she increased the visibility of the field of history librarianship, benefitting the entire profession of historical librarianship. Carr received her bachelor’s in history from Queens College, City University of New York and a master’s in Russian Area Studies from the City College of New York, City University of New York. She earned her MLIS from the Pratt Institute.

Carr accepted her award at the RUSA Awards Ceremony and Reception at the ALA Annual Conference, which was held July 9-15 in Chicago.

The Reference and User Services Association, a division of the American Library Association, represents librarians and library staff in the fields of reference, specialized reference, collection development, readers advisory and resource sharing. RUSA is the foremost organization of reference and information professionals who make the connections between people and the information sources, services, and collection materials they need.
