ALA President Loriene Roy to present Madison Award on Freedom of Information Day
President-elect Jim Rettig to give special presentation
WASHINGTON — On Friday, March 14, during the National Freedom of Information Day Conference, ALA President Loriene Roy will present the James Madison Award, which is given annually to recognize that individual or group that has championed, protected, and promoted public access to government information and the public's right to know.
2008 marks the 19th year that ALA will present the James Madison Award and the 42nd anniversary of the Freedom of Information Act.
The National FOI Day Conference, sponsored by the First Amendment Center, will be held in the new conference facilities at the Newseum, which will formally open in mid-April and is located at 555 Pennsylvania Ave, NW.
The following Monday, March 17, as Sunshine Week kicks off, ALA President-elect Jim Rettig will give a special presentation at American University's Washington College of Law (WCL), following Robert Vaughn's keynote presentation. This will be part of the first annual program recognizing FOI Day by WCL's new Collaboration on Government Secrecy.
Freedom of Information (FOI) Day is an annual event on or near March 16, the birthday of James Madison. Since Madison's birthday falls on a Sunday this year, the FOI Day festivities are being split between the First Amendment Center and American University's Washington College of Law.
