ALCTS announces Annual Conference forums

CHICAGO - The Association for Library Collections & Technical Services is offering a number of events at this year’s American Library Association (ALA) Annual Conference in Anaheim, Calif., as part of its continuing forum series of “hot” topics. Here is a sampling of those events.

Forum on International Authority Issues

The Cataloging and Classification Section of ALCTS and the Committee on Cataloging: Asian and African Materials is pleased to present this timely forum, “International Authority Issues: The TIME is NOW for Non-Roman Scripts in the Name Authority File”. This is the latest in a series of forums that ALCTS sponsors preceding its President’s Program. The forum begins at 8 a.m. Monday, June 30, in Salon F of the Marriott Hotel. This is to be followed at 10:30 a.m. by the President’s Program, “From Here to Eternity: the challenges of managing Oscars very special collections,” featuring Dr. Linda Mehr.

Speakers at the forum will include Barbara Tillett of the Library of Congress, who will discuss the Virtual International Authority File and LC’s work for non-Roman scripts in the National Authority File; Robert Bremer (OCLC), who will talk about the technical dimensions of the project to add non-Roman scripts to existing authority records; Diana Brooking (University of Washington), who will examine authority records and local systems: non-roman and other issues; and Celine Cheung (City University of Hong Kong) and Maria Lau (Chinese University of Hong Kong), who will give a short presentation on the Hong Kong Chinese Name Authority File.

Those involved in cataloging Non-Roman scripts or recognize the importance of representing Non-Roman languages in your catalogs will definitely want to attend!

RDA Update Forum

The next installment of the ongoing informational sessions regarding the new cataloging rules will be Resource Description and Access. Join us at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 28, in Salon E of the Marriott Hotel.

Publisher, Vendor, Library Relations (PVLR) Forum

Join your colleagues in this presentation and discussion of branding and marketing for libraries, publishers, and vendors from 8-10 a.m. on Monday, June 30, in room 213A of the Anaheim Convention Center.

Catalog Form and Function Interest Group

Building a "next generation" catalog, or planning for one? Come to the forum, "Old Records, New Records, New Interfaces,” sponsored by the ALCTS Catalog Form and Function Interest Group, and hear from three librarians who have recently navigated such a transition in their own organizations and can help you visualize the some of the promise and pitfalls of catalog redesign! From 10:30 a.m. to noon, Saturday, June 28, in the Marriott Anaheim Platinum Room 6.

Electronic Resources Interest Group

“ERMing for a Consortium: Are We There Yet?” Are there successful Electronic Resources Management systems (ERMs) implementation models for consortia? What are vendors doing to improve their systems to be deployed at the consortium level? What works? What doesn't work?

From 10:30 a.m. to noon Saturday, June 28, at the Disneyland Hotel, Adventure Room.

Serials Standards Update Forum

Be informed about new serials standards with this forum sponsored by Swets. The forum takes place at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, June 29, in the Hilton, Pacific Ballroom A.

Acquisitions Managers And Vendors Interest Group

“Many-To-Many: The Growing Complexity In Library-Vendor Relationships.”

Long gone are the days when a vendor representative met only with the heads of acquisitions and collection development. The breadth and depth of services now involve conversations with cataloging, serials, systems, administration, e-resources, subject liaisons and others. A lively discussion of these new roles and their complexity. Join the discussion, from 1:30-3:30 p.m. Sunday, June 29, in Disney’s Grand Californian, Trillium C.

This is just a sampling of the many ALCTS forums, discussion and interest group events taking place at the ALA Annual Conference in Anaheim. Check your program listing for more exciting and lively topics.
