Public Library of Charlotte & Mecklenburg County wins
2008 Scholastic Library Publishing National Library Week Grant
Public awareness campaign showcases
“Join the circle of knowledge @ your library®” theme
The Public Library of Charlotte & Mecklenburg County in Charlotte, N.C., is the winner of the 2008 Scholastic Library Publishing National Library Week Grant.
The $5,000 grant, sponsored by Scholastic Library Publishing and administered by the American Library Association’s (ALA) Public Awareness Committee, is awarded annually for the best public awareness campaign in support of National Library Week (April 13-19, 2008). This year, libraries were asked to develop a proposal using the 2008 National Library Week theme, “Join the circle of knowledge @ your library®.”
The Public Library of Charlotte & Mecklenburg County (PLCMC) will partner with local businesses, municipal agencies and the New York Public Library’s Donnell Children’s Room to promote reading and libraries. The library’s proposal includes the creation of a blog with New York Public Library called “Broadening the Circle,” which will serve as a virtual community between the two organizations. The library will also distribute Frisbee-like discs printed with the National Library Week theme at collaborating agencies and will post circular “knowledge boards” in the library, where library users can post “knowledge bytes” of community wisdom and library support. Two “Knowledge Rocks” concerts in Charlotte and New York City will conclude the week.
“The Public Library of Charlotte & Mecklenburg County has created a dynamic National Library Week campaign. Partnering with another library hundreds of miles away is an original idea, and we applaud their creativity,” said Lisa Rice, chair of the National Library Week Subcommittee.
Members of the 2008 National Library Week Subcommittee are: Lisa R. Rice (chair), Bowling Green (Ky.) Public Library; Elliot L. Appelbaum, Lexington (Ky.) Public Library; Gordon Baker, Clayton State University, Morrow, Ga.; Darlene Basone, school library consultant, Maineville, Ohio.
