JCLC Steering Committee pushing ahead to 2012
The Steering Committee for the Joint Conference of Librarians of Color (JCLC2012) is making significant progress toward its highly anticipated next conference, slated for sometime in 2012.
During the 2008 ALA Midwinter Meeting in Philadelphia, various committee responsibilities were defined, and each steering committee member stepped up to chair a major conference committee.
Marking the strong and serious commitment from the organizations, presidents of each of the five Caucuses signed the JCLC Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) and contributed their promised financial deposits for conference planning seed money.
The JCLC2012 steering committee is comprised of two representatives from each of the ALA-affiliated associations of librarians of color:
Janice Rice and Naomi R. Caldwell from the American Indian Library Association (AILA); Alanna Aiko Moore and Florante Peter Ibanez from the Asian Pacific American Librarians Association (APALA); Gladys Smiley Bell and Jennifer Lang from the Black Caucus of the American Library Association (BCALA); Haipeng Li and Dora Ho from the Chinese American Librarians Association (CALA); and Alexandra Rivera and Jacqueline Ayala from REFORMA, the National Association to Promote Library and Information Services to Latinos and the Spanish Speaking.
Marcellus Turner is the secretary on the steering committee, and Satia Orange is the ALA Staff Liaison.
The First Joint Conference of Librarians of Color (JCLC) in October 2006, was held in Dallas, TX. The theme, "Gathering at the Waters: Embracing our Spirits, Telling our Stories," offered more than 100 programs and poster sessions. Such topics as minority recruitment, early and adult literacy, collection development and delivery of service to communities of color were key areas of discussion.
