2008 Mary V. Gaver Scholarship recipient named

CHICAGO - The American Library Association (ALA) has announced that Ivy Kathleen Marvel of Brooklyn, N.Y., will receive the 2008 Mary V. Gaver Scholarship.

The $3,000 scholarship was established to honor the memory of Gaver, a past ALA president and Rutgers University professor, who made many contributions to library youth services. The scholarship is awarded to a person pursuing a master's degree in library and information studies, with a specialty in youth services.

“It is important for librarians serving teens to know about the latest Internet fads and how to counsel teens in the best use of those resources,” said Marvel, who currently works in the Brooklyn Public Library’s Flatbush Branch developing after-school programming for teens, as well as weeding and expanding the collection of young adult fiction and non-fiction.

Marvel plans to bring the knowledge she gains by obtaining her degree in library and information science back to the Flatbush branch for the benefit of the patrons. She is eager to attend graduate school to gain a more formal education in the trends and best practices that keep teenagers coming to the library.

Marvel will be attending Pratt Institute.
