ALSC to offer pre-Midwinter institute for those serving parenting teens and their children

CHICAGO - The Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC), a division of the American Library Association (ALA), will offer a pre-Midwinter Institute, "Teen Parents Raising Readers: Youth Services Staff Making It Happen,” on Friday, January 11, 2008, 9 a.m.- 5 p.m., prior to ALA’s Midwinter Meeting in Philadelphia.

This one-day institute presented by Saroj Ghoting, early literacy consultant, and Maryann Mori, teen specialist librarian, is for those who need information on early childhood development and children's materials or who currently serve or are interested in developing programs for pregnant or parenting teens and their children. This training session will provide hands-on activities and techniques to enable youth services librarians to present programs that help teens gain a better understanding of reading and that leave them with ways to interact with their children to support their later reading development.

This institute utilizes concepts from the "Every Child Ready to Read® @your library®" initiative, which was designed to prepare parents for their critical role in their children’s reading-readiness.

The institute is co-sponsored in name only by the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) and special advance registration pricing is available for ALSC and YALSA members. For more information and registration details, visit
