MLA announces co-sponsorship of Advocacy Institute at ALA 2007 Annual Conference

CHICAGO – The Maryland Library Association (MLA) has joined the list of regional co-sponsors of the Advocacy Institute at American Library Association’s (ALA) 2007 Annual Conference in Washington, DC.

Scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on June 22 in the Grand Ballroom South of the Renaissance Washington Hotel, the Advocacy Institute will feature topics on message development, coalition-building, and resources. During the afternoon, there will be a session led by former lobbyist and congressional aide Stephanie Vance of Advocacy Associates, LLC, will offer library advocates hands-on exercises, role-play and ways to effectively lobby decision makers in Congress. It will enable program participants – from public, school and academic librarians to Friends and trustees – to develop an action plan that they can use in their libraries or campuses.

Providing a valuable opportunity to network and share ideas with library advocates from around the country, the Advocacy Institute is one of several advocacy programs to be held during the 2007 ALA Annual Conference.

Saturday programs include the Washington Office Update Session from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. and Creating Advocacy Leaders: A Library Advocacy Now! training from 1:30-3:30. All events will culminate with a Day on the Hill, Tuesday, June 26, from 12:00p.m. to 4:00 p.m., when hundreds of Annual Conference attendees will gather on Capitol Hill to show the value of libraries to Members of Congress.
