New Orleans Public Library receives library materials from YALSA’s Great Book Giveaway

CHICAGO - The New Orleans Public Library is the winner of the 11th annual Great Book Giveaway and will receive literally a “ton” of young adult and adult books, CDs and audiocassettes. The Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA), the fastest growing division of the American Library Association (ALA), sponsors the contest consisting of items publishers and producers donated to YALSA in 2006. The estimated value of the collection is approximately $30,000.

The floodwaters that followed Hurricane Katrina damaged all the New Orleans Public Library’s 13 buildings. In eight of the 13 facilities, collections, computers, and furniture were beyond repair with the total damage currently estimated at $30 million.

“Most donors, individuals, and organizations do not automatically consider young adults/teens’ needs, especially at the library,” said Kim Tran in the winning application. “YALSA’s Great Book Giveaway will greatly help us get started in our goal of providing a place or haven and services for teens.”

When told the news about winning the books, Tran said, “This is so exciting! We are dependant on donations for YA materials and getting such a wonderful collection from YALSA will definitely be exciting for our teen patrons!”

“YALSA is pleased to be able to donate these materials to a library in need, and we are glad that the New Orleans Public Library has plans in place to put them to the best use,” said YALSA President Judy Nelson. “This experience has been a reminder that the road to recovery in New Orleans is a long one and that its citizens continue to need the nation’s help.”

The application form and information for next year’s Great Book Giveaway are available on the YALSA Web site, http://www.ala.org/yalsa.
