Dr. Ganga B. Dakshinamurti keynote speaker of ALA 6th annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Sunrise Celebration

CHICAGO - Dr. Ganga B. Dakshinamurti, librarian at the Albert Cohen Management Library in the University of Manitoba’s Asper School of Business, will be the keynote speaker of the 6th annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Sunrise Celebration, on January 14, 2008, at the Pennsylvania Convention Center, Room 113, from 6:30 - 7:30 a.m.

The theme for this year's celebration, "A Challenging Inspiration Lighting Our Way: From Gandhi to King Jr. to us,” reflects the power of “Satyagraha – truth and nonviolence” in overcoming aggression; a basis of Dr. King’s efforts in his civil rights agenda. Such efforts paved the way for attention to equity of access in libraries, which the annual observance highlights in the Association.

The program includes quotes from Dr. King’s writing and speeches read by committee, round table and association of librarians of color (caucus) leadership, for who the ALA Office for Literacy and Outreach Services (OLOS) serves as staff liaison. Also attending are ALA President Loriene Roy, ALA Executive Director Keith Michael Fiels and a representative of World Book, Inc., who sponsors the event with OLOS. Coffee and pastries are served for early attendees.

Dr. Dakshinamurti is a past president of the Asian/Pacific American Librarians Association (APALA), and served on the Steering Committee of the 2006 Joint Conference of Librarians of Color (JCLC).

Chairs of this event are Virginia Moore, chair of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Task Force of the Social responsibilities Round Table (SRRT) and Andrew Jackson, operations consultant at Roosevelt (N.Y.) Public Library and immediate past president of the Black Caucus of the American Library Association (BCALA).
