Celebrate Teen Read Week and win a visit
from author Tiffany Trent
CHICAGO - The library with the best celebration in honor of Teen Read Week™ will win a visit from renowned young adult author Tiffany Trent, announced the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA), the fastest-growing division of the American Library Association (ALA).
Trent is the author of the recently released “In the Serpent’s Coils,” the first novel in the Hallowmere series. She has also written the second entry in the Hallowmere series, “By Venom’s Sweet Sting,” available in December. Her visit is courtesy of Mirrorstone Books, an imprint of Wizards of the Coast and the 2007 Teen Read Week Corporate Sponsor. Founded in 2004, Mirrorstone publishes fantasy fiction for children and teens, with a goal of turning reluctant readers into lifelong readers.
All current YALSA members who intend to hold a special 2007 Teen Read Week celebration may enter the contest by reading contest rules and downloading the application form available at
www.ala.org/teenread. Entrants should describe in 250 words or less why their program exemplified the Teen Read Week theme of “reading for the fun of it.” Entries must be received by the YALSA office no earlier than September 1, 2007 but no later than November 30, 2007. The winner will be judged on originality and creativity, with notification coming in January 2008. Trent’s visit will be scheduled for March 2008.
Now in its 10th year, Teen Read Week is a national literacy initiative aimed at teens, their parents, librarians, educators, booksellers and other concerned adults. The purpose of the event is to increase the number of teens who are regular readers and library users. It began in 1998 and is celebrated the third week in October. The 2007 theme is “LOL @ your library,” which
encourages teens to read something humorous or light, just for the fun of it. Teen Read Week 2007 will be October 14–21, 2007. For more information, visit the Teen Read Week Web site at
www.ala.org/teenread.
For 50 years, YALSA has been the world leader in selecting books, videos, and audio books for teens. For more information about YALSA or for lists of recommended reading, viewing and listening, go to
