Nominations sought for annual ALA Recognition Awards and Grants

CHICAGO - Nominations are being sought for the 2007 American Library Association (ALA) Recognition Awards and Grants.
Unless otherwise noted, the deadline for applications is December 1, 2006.
The following lists the major ALA awards with the websites for application guidelines:

  • ALA Information Today Library of the Future Award honors a library, library consortium, group of librarians, or support organization for their innovative planning for, applications of, or development of patron training programs about information technology in a library setting. The award includes $1,500 and a 24k gold-framed citation, donated by Information Today, Inc. For more information, see:

  • Beta Phi Mu Award is presented to a faculty member of a library school or an individual for distinguished service to education in librarianship.
    The award includes $1,000 and a 24k gold-framed citation donated by Beta Phi Mu International Library Science Honorary Society. For more information, see:

  • W. Y. Boyd Literary Award is given to an author of a military novel that honors the service of American veterans during a time of war.
    The award includes $5,000 and a 24k gold-framed citation, donated by William Young Boyd, II.

  • Marshall Cavendish Excellence in Library Programming Award is given to a school or public library that demonstrates excellence in library programming by providing programs that have community impact and respond to community needs. Advocacy, partnerships and creative use of resources, regardless of the size of the library, will be taken into consideration. The award includes $2,000 and a 24k gold-framed citation, donated by the Marshall Cavendish Corporation. For more information, see:

  • Melvil Dewey Medal honors an individual or group for a recent creative professional achievement in library management, training, cataloging and classification or the tools and techniques of librarianship. The award includes a Dewey Medal and a 24k gold-framed citation, donated by OCLC/Forest Press, Inc. For more information, see:

  • EBSCO ALA Conference Sponsorship provides 10 $1,000 awards for actual reimbursed expenses to help librarians attend ALA's Annual Conference. To apply for this award, applicants must submit an essay of no more than 250 words addressing, "How will attending this ALA Conference contribute to your professional development?"
    The award is donated by EBSCO Subscription Services.

  • Equality Award honors an individual or group for an outstanding contribution that promotes equality in the library profession.
    The award includes $500 and a 24k gold-framed citation donated by Scarecrow Press, Inc.

  • Elizabeth Futas Catalyst for Change Award recognizes and honors a librarian who invests time and talent to make a positive change in the profession of librarianship.

  • Thomson Gale Financial Development Award is given to a library organization that exhibited meritorious achievement in carrying out a library financial development project to secure new funding resources for a public or academic library.

  • Ken Haycock Award for Promoting Librarianship honors an individual for contributing significantly to the public recognition and appreciation of librarianship through professional performance, teaching and/or writing.
    The award includes $1,000 and a 24k gold-framed citation, donated by Ken Haycock, PhD.

  • Paul Howard Award for Courage honors a librarian, library board, library group or an individual who has exhibited unusual courage for the benefit of library programs or services.
    The award, given every two years, includes $1,000 and a 24k gold-framed citation, donated by the Paul Howard Memorial Fund.
    Bi-annual award application deadline December 1, 2006.

  • Joseph W. Lippincott Award is given to a librarian for distinguished service to the profession.
    To qualify, the librarian must display outstanding participation in professional library activities, notably published professional writing or other significant activities on behalf of the profession.
    The award includes $1,000 and a 24k gold-framed citation, donated by Joseph W. Lippincott, III.

  • Schneider Family Book Award honors an author or illustrator for a book that encourages artistic expression of the disability experience for child and adolescent audiences.
    Three recipients will receive $5,000 each and a plaque.
    One award will be given in each category.
    The categories are: birth through grade school (ages 0-10), middle school (ages 11-13) and teens (ages 13-18). (Age groupings are approximations). The book must emphasize the artistic expression of the disability experience for children and or adolescent audiences. The book must portray some aspect of living with a disability or that of a friend or family member, whether the disability is physical, mental or emotional.

  • Scholastic Library Publishing Award (formerly the Grolier Award) honors a librarian whose unusual contribution to the stimulation and guidance of reading by children and young people exemplifies outstanding achievement in the profession.
    The award includes $1,000 and a 24k gold-framed citation, donated by Scholastic Library Publishing.

  • Sullivan Award for Public Library Administrators Supporting Services to Children honors an individual who has shown exceptional understanding and support of public library service to children while having general management/supervisory/administrative responsibility that has included public library service to children in its scope.
    The recipient will receive a commemorative gift and a 24k gold-framed citation, donated by Peggy Sullivan. For more information, see:

  • H.W. Wilson Library Staff Development Grant is awarded to a library organization for a program of staff development designed to further the goals and objectives of the library organization.

  • World Book-ALA Goal Grant is awarded to ALA units for the advancement of public, academic or school library service and librarianship through support of programs that advance the mission, goals and priorities of ALA.
    Recipients receive $10,000 donated by World Book, Inc.
    The application deadline is March 1, 2007.
