Hersberger, Pinder seek ALA Treasurer post
(CHICAGO) Rod Hersberger, dean of the University Library at California State University-Bakersfield (CSUB), and Jo Ann Pinder, recent executive director of the Gwinnett County (Ga.) Public Library, are candidates for the 2007-2010 term as treasurer of the American Library Association (ALA).
Hersberger currently serves on the ALA Budget Analysis and Review Committee (2005-2009). He represented the Library Administration and Management Association (LAMA) on the ALA Council from 1989 to 1993 and chaired LAMA’s Financial Management Committee from 1982 to 1984. He also served as a juror on the American Institute of Architects (AIA)/ALA Library Buildings Award Committee in 1997 and 1999.
Hersberger joined CSUB in 1984. Under his direction, the university built a new library that opened in 1994. Previously he served as assistant to the dean for Administrative Services and the acting assistant director for Technical Services at the University of Oklahoma. He also held several positions at Northern Illinois University, where he directed the move to the new Founders’ Memorial Library. In 2001, he opened LibrariesByDesign, LLC, a library building consultancy practice.
Hersberger holds a B.A. in accounting and an M.L.S. from Indiana University and has his M.B.A. from Northern Illinois University.
Pinder currently serves as an at-large member of the ALA Council. She previously served as a chapter councilor for Maryland and a division councilor for the Public Library Association (PLA). She was the 2002-2003 PLA president and co-chaired PLA’s 2002 National Conference Program Committee. Pinder also has served on the ALA Planning and Budget Assembly.
For 15 years, Pinder led the Gwinnett County Public Library, which has an operating budget of more than $20 million. The library was named the Library of the Year in 2000 by Gale Group/Library Journal. From 1982 to 1991, Pinder served as the associate administrator for Anne Arundel County (Md.) Public Library, and she was the coordinator for the Cooperating Libraries of Central Maryland from 1978 to 1982.
Pinder has her M.L.S. from the University of Pittsburgh. She also is a graduate of the John F. Kennedy School of Government Program for Senior Executives in State and Local Government.
ALA members current as of January 31 will vote on the spring ballot.
LAMA and PLA are divisions of the ALA.
