Coretta Scott King Awards breakfast honors namesake June 27 at ALA Annual Conference in New Orleans

(CHICAGO) The 2006 Coretta Scott King Book Awards breakfast will be held Tuesday, June 27, 2006, at the New Orleans Hilton Hotel in the Grand Ballroom, A&B, from 7 to 9 a.m. The annual breakfast celebrates African-American books and the life of Coretta Scott King, for whom the award is named.

Coretta Scott King Author and Illustrator award recipients Julius Lester ("Day of Tears") and Bryan Collier ("Rosa") and Coretta Scott King-John Steptoe New Talent Award recipient Jamie Adoff, "Jimi & Me," will be honored and discuss their works.

A tribute to Mrs. King will feature memories of her last visit at the 2003 awards ceremony in Atlanta. Also honored will be Basil Phillips, photo editor of Johnson Publishing Company, who presented the author awards at the breakfast for most of the 35 years of the award.

"A book can put a child on the right course," said Fran Ware, chairman of the Coretta Scott King Book Awards Committee. "They clutch it to their heart and head into the future and make it. That's what these books are for."

Children from area schools will attend the breakfast, which is sponsored by children's publishers and award advocates from Florida and Georgia. The annual Hyperion Jump-at-the-Sun award will be presented to child essayists. For more information on 36 years of the Coretta Scott King Award, please visit
