OLOS preconference on library service to older adults

Online registration until June 9

CHICAGO - "Reaching Out to Older Adults: The Why and How of Library Services" is a preconference with a bottom line: it seeks to support local library staff in working with older adults. Sponsored by the Office for Literacy and Outreach Services (OLOS), the preconference will introduce local library staff to issues reflecting effective service delivery based on "tried and true" practices. It will take place on Thursday, June 22, and Friday, June 23, at Annual Conference in New Orleans. Online registration is open until June 9.

Five American Library Association (ALA) past presidents, librarian delegates of the 2005 White House Conference on Aging, and representatives from three national organizations serving older adults will join the presenters, mostly librarians whose services reflect creative and successful programs across the country. The preconference is an outcome of the White House Conference on Aging Forum held at the 2005 Annual Conference in Chicago.

Discussions - all repeated twice - on active aging, disabilities, use of technology, program management, intergenerational programs, staff development, evaluation and research, and language, cultures and gender issues are a part of the two-day session. Conferees also will hear discussions on local partnerships, funding and the 2005 White House Conference on Aging.

A Thursday evening banquet, "Leadership Perspectives in the Senior Service Community," will feature Betty Turock, ALA past president (1995-96), a recognized advocate of library services for older adults. Kristin Facos, SeniorNet, Inc.; Louis C. Johnson, Sr., ProLiteracy Worldwide, Inc; and Tony Sarmiento, Senior Services, Inc. will respond to
Turock's remarks and discuss how their organizations' services reflect cooperation with libraries. Librarians Carolyn Neal, SeniorsConnect of the Cleveland (Ohio) Public Library, and Kathy Mayo, Lee County (Fla.) Library System, will reflect on the impact of collaboration between libraries and local organizations. Leslie Burger, ALA president-elect, will moderate the program.

In the Closing Session ALA past presidents Patricia G. Schuman (1991-92), Barbara Ford (1997-98) and Nancy Kranich (2000-01) and President-elect Loriene Roy (2007-08) will address next steps for the library community.

The preconference chair is Allan Kleiman, ALA RUSA RSS Library Service to an Aging Population Committee, and assistant library director, Old Bridge (N.J.) Public Library. Registration: ALA member: $225; non-member: $275.

OLOS is an office of the ALA.
