ALCTS announces upcoming continuing education events

CHICAGO - Registration for the Association for Library Collections & Technical Services (ALCTS) summer continuing education programs is now open. Programs include:

Metadata Applications and Standards, an ALCTS/Library of Congress Workshop

July 24-25, 2006 in Chicago

September 19-20, 2006 in Atlanta, Ga.(co-sponsored by SOLINET)

This two-day workshop presents 21st century bibliographic control concepts, including specific metadata standards and applications. Presented by Diane Hillmann, the workshop relates what library staff already know about library catalog metadata to digital library metadata, thereby preparing staff to apply their current knowledge to new areas.

Metadata and Digital Library Development, an ALCTS/Library of Congress Workshop

July 17-18, 2006 in Washington, DC

In an applied, exercise-based context, this two-day workshop introduces practicing catalogers to metadata implementation considerations and processes in a digital library development context.
Presented by David Ruddy and Marty Kurth, the workshop prepares attendees to serve as metadata specialists in digital library projects.

Fundamentals of Acquisitions, a four-week Web-based Course

July 10 - August 4, 2006

August 28 - September 22, 2006

October 16 - November 10, 2006

Participants of this popular four-week Web-based course receive a broad overview of the operations involved in acquiring materials after the selection decision is made.
The five basic components are goals of acquisitions services; methods and basic functions of acquisitions; vendors; ethics; and budget/finance and accounting.
This course is tailored for librarians and paraprofessionals new to the acquisitions field.
As it is a fundamentals course, topics are introductory in nature. Class segments are geared to cover issues of interest to staff in all types of libraries.

Principles of Controlled Vocabulary and Thesaurus Design, an ALCTS/Library of Congress Workshop

September 12-13, 2006 in Atlanta, Ga.

This two-day workshop presents an overview of thesaurus design principles, methods for building a controlled vocabulary, and an examination of selected controlled vocabularies.
Presented by Jillian Wallis, this workshop prepares catalogers to defend the use of controlled vocabularies and to participate in the development of specialized thesauri or glossaries for specific projects.
