PLA sponsors one-day workshop on implementing a strategic plan

CHICAGO - On September 18, 2006, the Public Library Association (PLA) is sponsoring a workshop,
Implementing for Results: From Idea to Action, in Pittsburgh. This one-day workshop will provide library managers with the skills they need to use their library's strategic plans as blueprints for change.

Most public libraries have developed at least one strategic plan in the past decade and many update their plans regularly.
However, public library managers have discovered that there is a big difference between planning and doing.
This workshop will include tips and tools to help managers:

* Identify current and new activities

* Evaluate the effectiveness of those activities

* Select preliminary activities

* Put those activities into context and identify strategic initiatives

* Determine the resource requirements for the selected activities

* Develop criteria to select final activities

* Create action plans for each selected activity

* Realign resources to support the final activities

* Monitor the implementation of the final activities

Workshop leader Sandra Nelson is a nationally recognized library consultant specializing in public library planning and management issues.
She has either authored/co-authored or served as editorial consultant for each of the Results series titles.

Implementing for Results will be held at the Omni William Penn Hotel in Pittsburgh.
