ALSC silent auction nets funds to benefit libraries in the Gulf Coast
CHICAGO-The Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC), a division of the American Library Association (ALA), is pleased to announce it raised $2050 for the benefit of the ALA Hurricane Katrina Library Relief Fund.
Bidders responded enthusiastically to a silent auction of original art from the 2006 Newbery and Caldecott Medal award-winning books conducted at the ALSC membership booth during the recent ALA Annual Conference in New Orleans.
The auction featured two pieces of original art donated by the 2006 John Newbery and Randolph Caldecott medalists. Author Lynne Rae Perkins donated one of her drawings (featuring the character Lenny) that appeared in the Newbery Medal award-winning title "Criss Cross" (Greenwillow, 2005); artist Chris Raschka donated a full-color sketch of the cover art for "The Hello, Goodbye Window," the Caldecott Medal winner.
"ALSC extends its gratitude to Lynne and Chris for their generous donations which will benefit libraries in the Gulf Coast," said Kathleen Horning, ALSC president.
The Association for Library Service to Children develops and supports the profession of children's librarianship by enabling and encouraging its practitioners to provide the best library service to our nation's children.
Its more than 4,000 members provide library service to children from preschool through the eighth grade or junior high school age.
