BCALA announces Smiley Student Fund

CHICAGO - The Black Caucus of the American Library Association (BCALA) is pleased to announce the Smiley Student Fund. The fund will provide two applicants with funds to attend the Joint Conference of Librarians of Color (JCLC) in Dallas, Texas from October 11-15, 2006.

A $500 check will be awarded to two students to attend the JCLC, the first-ever national conference to be held and sponsored by the American Library Association's five caucuses of color. Caucus participants include: the American Indian Library Association (AILA); the Asian/Pacific American Librarians Association (APALA); the Black Caucus of the American Library Association (BCALA); the Chinese American Librarians Association (CALA) and the National Association to Provide Library and Information Services to Latinos and the Spanish Speaking (REFORMA).

Applicants must be an active student member of BCALA and a full-time graduate student in an accredited Library School graduate program. For additional application requirements and guidelines please visit

Complete application materials must be mailed to Mr. Gerald Holmes, Chair Selection Committee, BCALA - Smiley Student Fund, PO Box 2383, Greensboro, NC 27402-2383, and received by Friday, March 31, 2006.

Award recipients will be announced on the BCALA Web site no later than June 28, 2006.

The Smiley Student Fund Selection Committee consists of Gerald Holmes, chair, Audrey Taylor, Jessica Brown and Patricia M. Richard.

The Black Caucus of the American Library Association serves as an advocate for the development, promotion, and improvement of library services and resources to the nation's African American community; and provides leadership for the recruitment and professional development of African American librarians.
