Peggy Barber makes planned gift to Cultural Communities Fund
Gift will provide ongoing support for library programming initiatives
CHICAGO - The Development Office of the American Library Association (ALA) is pleased to announce that Peggy Barber, a charter member of the ALA Legacy Society, has recently named the Cultural Communities Fund (CCF) in her estate plans. The Cultural Communities Fund is an endowment created to help all types of libraries across the country bring communities together through cultural programming. CCF is an initiative of the Public Programs Office, which was established in 1990 to foster cultural programming as an integral part of library service in all types of libraries.
Currently a principal consultant of Library Communication Strategies Inc. in Chicago, Barber was a staff member of ALA for more than 30 years and established the Public Programs Office in 1990. Prior to joining ALA, she worked as a public librarian. In 1999, she received the Lippincott Award for distinguished service to the library profession.
"In all the different roles I've played in the field of librarianship, I've seen the value and impact of cultural programming illustrated many times," Barber said. "I know that excellent humanities programs are essential to service in all kinds of libraries, and I am proud to offer my support to CCF in order to provide for the future of those programs."
Barber made her gift to support CCF through the ALA Planned Giving Program, which was established in 2001 to allow association members and library supporters to provide for the long-term needs of ALA through estate planning. Barber will be recognized for her planned gift through the ALA Legacy Society and the CCF Heritage Society.
"Planned giving is wonderful way to express your commitment to ALA and its mission," said Joan Claffey, director of the ALA Development Office. "By designating ALA, or a specific issue or area of interest in your estate plans, you ensure ALA's future for generations. We are delighted that Peggy has chosen to support the Cultural Communities Fund in this special way."
All those who have named ALA or one of its units or initiatives in their will are invited to join the ALA Legacy Society, regardless of the size of their gift. The Legacy Society was established in 2001 to recognize ALA's members and friends who have made provisions for ALA through an estate plan. Legacy Society members receive invitations to events and other gatherings annually, as well as special recognition during the year to celebrate their important commitment to ALA.
