CHICAGO —The American Association of School Librarians (AASL), a division of the American Library Association (ALA), is pleased to announce recognition of five graduate programs leading to a master's degree in education with a specialization in school library media or master's degree in library and information studies under the ALA/AASL Standards For Initial Programs for School Library Media Specialist Preparation:
- Master of Education offered by the School Library Program, School of Education , University of Colorado at Denver
- Master of Library Science offered by the Department of Library Science and Instructional Technology, East Carolina University

- Master of Education offered by the School Library and Information Technologies Program, Mansfield University.
AASL, on behalf of ALA, has developed rigorous standards for recognition of programs preparing school library media specialists. ALA recognizes both the master's degree in librarianship from a program accredited by the ALA or a master's degree with a specialty in school library media from an educational unit accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education as the appropriate first professional degree for school library media specialists (Adopted July 6, 1988, by ALA Council). A complete list of programs recognized by AASL can be found at
