AASL's Awards Luncheon to feature prominent young adult nonfiction authors
CHICAGO - The American Association of School Librarians (AASL), a division of the American Library Association (ALA), is pleased to announce authors Ann Bausum and Sue Macy will speak at the Awards Luncheon and President's Reception at the 2006 ALA Annual Conference in New Orleans.
Ann Bausum is an accomplished writer for the National Geographic Society. She writes about U.S. history for readers 10 years old and older. Bausum received the Juvenile Literary Award for new writers from the Friends of American Writers in 2000 for her book "Dinosaur Bones and Dinosaur Eggs- A Photobiography of Explorer Roy Chapman Andrew." Her 2004 work, "With Courage and Cloth-Winning the Fight for a Woman's Right to Vote" earned a Jane Addams Children's Book Award as the year's Outstanding Book for Older Readers, a prize that recognizes the best books about peace, social justice, world community, and the equality of the sexes and all races. The book also was named a Notable Book and a Best Book for Young Adults by ALA's Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA).
Sue Macy is a lifelong sports fan and supporter of women's role in sports. She is the author of "A Whole New Ball Game: The Story of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League," the true story behind the movie "A League of Their Own." Her other books include "Winning Ways: A Photohistory of American Women in Sports," a compilation of major trends, turning points and "firsts" in women's sports; and "Play Like a Girl: A Celebration of Women in Sports," a collection of stories, articles, biographies, slides and photos trying to capture the real female athletic experience. In addition to writing several other books about women's sports, Macy serves on the board of directors for the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League Players Association.
The AASL Awards Luncheon is on Monday, June 26, 2006, from noon to 2 p.m., during the ALA Annual Conference in New Orleans. It will celebrate the accomplishments of AASL members with the presentation of the 2006 AASL Awards, including the prestigious National School Library Media Program of the Year Award (NSLMPY), sponsored by Follett Library Resources. Immediately following the Awards Luncheon is the AASL President's Reception, providing the opportunity to meet the AASL president, board members and other AASL leaders.
