2006 Miriam L. Hornback Scholarship winner named

CHICAGO - The American Library Association (ALA) is pleased to announce Andrea Wallis of Everett, Washington is the 2006 recipient of the Miriam L. Hornback Scholarship.

The $3,000 award is given to an ALA or library support staff member to finance studies toward a master's degree in library and information studies.
The scholarship was named in memory of Miriam Hornback, a longtime ALA staff member, who was secretariat to the ALA Council and Executive Board.

Wallis experienced libraries for the first time at an early age.
While attending a program involving snakes, she had the opportunity to touch a boa constrictor.
This experience gave her the feeling that a library was a place for surprising encounters where anything could happen. While substitute teaching by day Wallis became a Page at the Everett Public Library by night.

In her current position as senior technician, Wallis teaches library patrons about the library computer system.
Wallis believes public libraries are the cornerstones of our communities.

"Where a library remains strong, vibrant and supported, its citizens are better off," Wallis said.

Wallis envisions herself in a role where she can assist people in experiencing the joy of learning and finding resources.

Wallis will be attending the University of Washington
