World Book - ALA Goal Grant recipient named
CHICAGO - The American Library Association (ALA) is proud to announce that the Office for Research and Statistics (ORS) is the winner of the 2006 World Book - American Library Association (ALA) Goal Grant Award. ORS is honored for its proposal "Public Library Service to the Nation's Linguistically Isolated: An Analysis Using the Public Library Geographic Database and US Census Data 2000."
ORS will work in partnership with the ALA Office for Literacy and Outreach Services (OLOS), the Office for Diversity (OFD), and the Public Programs Office (PPO).
The award, consisting of a $10,000 grant donated by World Book, Inc., is given to ALA units for the advancement of public, academic or school library service and librarianship through the support of programs that implement the goals and priorities of the ALA.
"The committee applauds this thorough, thoughtful and well-prepared proposal, with its narrow, specific and achievable focus," said World Book Jury Chair Jacqueline Sasaki of Ann Arbor (Mich.) District Library.
"The project will advance the key action areas of
ALAHEAD to 2010, namely, equity of access, diversity, intellectual freedom, and continuous learning.
"Potentially, the project would have a wide impact on all public libraries in helping them identify, understand and better serve their communities, affecting all age groups, as well as the 21 million people in the United States who speak limited or no English," Sasaki added. "The committee foresees the applicability of the data in other ALA initiatives such as literacy, school libraries and the future of librarianship. It could also encourage our corporate membership in the development of materials and technology for the underserved."
Denise Davis, director of the ALA Office for Research and Statistics, thanked the committee for selecting this project. Davis also will be working closely with the GeoLib Program of the College of Information at Florida State University.
Other members of the 2006 World Book Goal Award are: Nancy L. Bujold, Capitol Area (Mich.) District Library; Gale Burrow, Honnold/Mudd (Calif.) Library; Linda J. Goff, California State University, Sacramento; and Leanne Hansen, University of Wisconsin, Green Bay.
The World Book Goal Award will be presented Tuesday, June 27, during the ALA Annual Conference in New Orleans.
