RUSA to host institute, “Traces and Trails of Genealogy of the Southwest,” during Midwinter Meeting on January 20
CHICAGO— The History Section of the Reference and User Services Association (RUSA) is hosting an institute, “Traces and Trails of Genealogy of the Southwest,” on Friday, January 20, 2006, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., during the American Library Association (ALA) Midwinter Meeting in San Antonio.
This one-day educational institute focusing on ancestry research of the American Southwest will be held at The Alamo, San Antonio's most well known landmark. Attendees will learn about the famous traces and trails of the Southwest including the Cherokee Trail and Natchez Trace. The speakers will discuss the emigrant routes and patterns that led to the expansion of the West.
Attendees also will receive a tour of the archives and special collections of The Alamo (
www.thealamo.org/main.html). The Alamo, a symbol in the cultural and political struggle of Texas' independence, was known originally as “Misión San Antonio de Valero.” It is managed by the Daughters of the Republic of Texas and represents almost 300 years of history. The Alamo is located conveniently near the Riverwalk or “Paseo Del Rio” in downtown San Antonio, and is walking distance from the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center.
