ALA Board approves dues proposal for Council consideration

(CHICAGO) At its fall meeting, the American Library Association (ALA) Executive Board approved recommendations from the Budget Analysis and Review Committee (BARC) and Membership Committee to send to the ALA Council a proposal to increase dues over the coming three years. If approved by Council at the ALA Midwinter Meeting in January, the issue would be placed on the 2006 ALA member ballot.

BARC Chair Patty Wong presented the recommendation, which calls for a $30 increase, phased in over three years, for ALA regular members. For other personal dues categories, a smaller increase is proposed over the same period.

"The last increase was approved in 1995. Then, as now, we had a mandate from membership to implement an ambitious strategic plan," said ALA President Michael Gorman. "Ahead to 2010 engaged more than 20,000 members over two years before its approval last June. The dues increase will enable ALA to work even more effectively in the areas identified as vital by the membership."
