Cynthia A. Phillip elected AASL president for 2006-2007

CHICAGO – Cynthia (Cyndi) A. Phillip, elementary school library media specialist for the Grand Haven (Mich.) area public schools, has been elected president of the American Association of School Librarians (AASL), a division of the American Library Association (ALA), for the 2006-2007 term. Phillip won over Gail K. Dickinson, assistant professor at Old Dominion University.

As AASL president, Phillip will be leading the nation's only association for school library media professionals. Established in 1951, AASL has nearly 10,000 members and its mission is to advocate excellence, facilitate change, and develop leaders in the school library media field.

Phillip will become president-elect in July 2005 and will assume the AASL presidency in July 2006, following the ALA Annual Conference in New Orleans. She will serve a one-year term as president.

“I wish to express my sincere appreciation to the AASL membership and my school district for their support,” said Phillip. “I will do my very best to represent the needs of the members of the association as AASL decides upon actions to accomplish the new strategic plan. I look forward to getting to know more members as I work through the next three years of presidential responsibilities. I also want to acknowledge my fellow candidate, Gail K. Dickinson, who has contributed a great deal to AASL and the school library media profession.”

Phillip is a past president of the Michigan Association for Media in Education (MAME) and a past chair of the AASL Affiliate Assembly. She currently serves on ALA Council as member-at-large. She is also program co-chair for the 2005 AASL National Conference in Pittsburgh.

Phillip has worked for Grand Haven Area Public Schools library media program for the past 19 years in various leadership positions for the school district, including associate principal, coordinator of library media department and department head. In her prior positions, she worked as a library media specialist for Van Buren Public Schools in Belleville, Mich. and as a reading teacher for Sylvania [Ohio] City Schools.

Phillip has a master's in library science from Western Michigan University and a master's in educational leadership from Western Michigan University. She received her bachelor's from Capital University in Columbus, Ohio.
