World Book – ALA Goal Grant recipients named
CHICAGO - The American Library Association (ALA) is proud to announce the winners of the 2005 World Book – American Library Association (ALA) Goal Grant Award. The Office for Literacy and Outreach Services (OLOS) , the Association For Library Trustees & Advocates (ALTA), the Chapter Relations Office, the Public Information Office (PIO), Office for Research and Statistics (ORS) and the ALA Washington Office were named recipients for their project “Advocacy for Rural, Native and Tribal School and Public Libraries.”
The award consists of a $10,000 grant, donated by World Book, Inc., which is given to ALA units for the advancement of public, academic or school library service and librarianship through the support of programs that implement the goals and priorities of the ALA.
The Advocacy for Rural, Native and Tribal School and Public Libraries project seeks to develop key messaging and a toolkit to support a new national advocacy campaign promoting the needs and contributions of rural, native and tribal libraries. The toolkit will utilize the key messages in various communications vehicles adapted to meet the libraries' own needs and interests. The project will help generate public awareness about the value of rural, native and tribal libraries and librarians and also advance grassroots advocacy, addressing objectives in ALA's new strategic plan, ALA Ahead to 2010. The initiative is part of @ your library®, The Campaign for America's Libraries.
“The committee felt it addressed all the ALAction 2005 goals most admirably and looked Ahead to 2010,” said Jury Chair Jacqueline Sasaki. “The application was thoughtful and well prepared and we are impressed with the partnership which brings together all the various ALA offices and the academic community. We wish Gerald Hodges and his committee every success in developing key messaging and a toolkit to support the needs and contributions of rural, native and tribal libraries.”
Member of the 2005 World Book Goal Award Committee are: Chair Jacqueline Ka – Yin Sasaki, Ann Arbor District Library; Nancy L. Bujold. Capital Area District Library, Lansing, Mich.; Jane E. Conway, Highland Park Public Library, Highland Park, Ill.; Roshayne L. Jaimon, Ann Arbor District Library; and Linda C. Smith, University of Il GSLIS, Champaign, Ill.
The World Book ALA Goal Award will be presented Tuesday, June 28, during the ALA Annual Conference in Chicago.
