ALA president to speak on Spanish-language library outreach

at Book Expo, June 4

CHICAGO - American Library Association (ALA) President Carol A. Brey-Casiano will speak on "How Libraries are Reaching Out to Spanish-Language Speakers" at Book Expo, the largest publishing event in the United States, Saturday, June 4, in New York City.
The event will be held at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center, Room 1E3, beginning at 11:30 a.m.

Brey-Casiano and Cinco Puntos Press Publisher Bobby Byrd, co-presenter, will address different ways to serve the growing Latino community in our nation; recent trends in Spanish language/bilingual publishing; and what publishers, writers, and librarians should keep in mind when targeting the Latino community. They also will introduce the book, "Bienvenidos! Welcome! A Handy Resource Guide for Marketing Your Library to Latinos," co-published by ALA Publishing and Cinco Puntos Press.

"Libraries today need up-to-date, relevant Spanish-language materials to serve the growing Latino population," said Brey-Casiano. "The American Library Association has developed useful ideas and resources to increase Latino participation and strengthen the development of outreach services to Spanish speakers."

Over 28 million Americans are Spanish speakers and Spanish is the non-English language most frequently spoken at home in the United States, according to the U.S. Census.

Brey-Casiano also will speak on library outreach to Latinos in a panel program,
Bienvenidos! Welcome! Marketing Your Library to Latinos, at the ALA Annual Conference, June 25, beginning at 11 a.m in Chicago. AFL-REFORMA (the National Association to Promote Library and Information Services to Latinos and the Spanish Speaking) and Brey-Casiano are sponsoring the event.

Other presenters include Susie Byrd, Cinco Puntos Press; Jose Ruiz Alvarez, REFORMA President; Loida Garcia-Febo, Queens Library; Ghada Elturck, Boulder Public Library; Martha Toscano, El Paso Public Library; and Jack Galindo, El Paso Public Library. This panel session is meant for those who would like to increase Latino participation in their libraries. Presenters will share ideas, resources and strategies.
