CHICAGO—The Association of Specialized and Cooperative Library Agencies (ASCLA) is hosting a preconference for librarians interested in learning about careers as independent consultants called, “Business 101: The Practical Aspects of Becoming an Independent Consultant,” on Friday, June 24, 2005, 8:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. during the American Library Association (ALA) Annual Conference, in Chicago.
The full-day workshop will provide attendees with practical information needed to move from library employment to successful careers in consulting. The extensive workshop materials include descriptive profiles of successful freelance librarians and their professional activities in research, consulting, training, Web development, planning facilitation, writing, editing, cataloging and indexing. Several of the business owners profiled will join the speakers and organizers in the afternoon closing panel session titled, “If I Knew Then What I Know Now,” where they reveal their own assessment of the largest mistakes or missed opportunities in their consulting careers, and what they have learned from them.
The featured speakers are Carol Berger, founder and chairman of the Board of C. Berger Group, Inc., and Jan Sykes, principal, Information Management Services, Inc.
The registration includes a catered lunch and refreshment breaks.
