ALA member libraries to receive copies of Oprah's Book Club “A Summer of Faulkner” picks
CHICAGO - Thanks to a continuing partnership with Oprah's Book Club
®, American Library Association (ALA) organizational library members will receive free copies of the entire “A Summer of Faulkner” selections, including “As I Lay Dying,” “The Sound and the Fury” and “Light in August,” in a boxed set from Random House/Vintage Books USA.
Winner of both the Pulitzer Prize and Nobel Prize for Literature, William Faulkner's novels and short stories are central in the American literary tradition. Three distinguished Faulkner scholars will moderate discussions throughout the summer of 2005 on Oprah's Book Club website,
www.oprah.com. Discussion guides, background on Faulkner, book club organizing tips, and printable bookmarks are provided online.
Since its beginning in 1996, publishers of Oprah's Book Club selections have donated nearly 550,000 free books to ALA organizational members for use in their communities. Winfrey has made the book donation program a central part of her Book Club, enabling libraries across the country to provide access to new and classic titles for readers.
"The American Library Association and its members appreciate this generous gift. Ms. Winfrey and Random House's continued support of library book clubs and literacy efforts is outstanding," said ALA Manager for Membership Development John Chrastka.
“A Summer of Faulkner” boxed set will be sent free of charge by Random House/Vintage Books USA to ALA member public libraries, community college libraries, and middle and high school library media centers.
For information on becoming an organizational or library member of ALA and receiving your own complimentary copies of “A Summer of Faulkner” selections, please visit www.ala.org/membership. Qualified libraries have until June 17, 2005 to become members and receive this selection.
