New PLA publication provides ready-to-use intellectual freedom training
CHICAGO - “Defending Access with Confidence: A Practical Workshop On Intellectual Freedom” is an interactive and ready-to-use training program that provides libraries with step-by-step directions for planning and rolling out a comprehensive training program on access issues and resolving challenges to access.
Designed and written by Catherine Lord, an intellectual freedom trainer from the King County (Washington) Library System, for the Public Library Association (PLA), this book and accompanying CD-ROM will address the needs of all types of learners. “Defending Access” provides content for four workshops: History and Philosophy, Library Policies and Procedures, Skills for Recognizing and Responding to Challenges, and Strategies and Practice. The book also includes learning activities, handouts, and tips for trainers.
As a result of this training, library employees will gain an understanding of the history and philosophy of intellectual freedom in U.S. libraries, and will be better able to identify and interpret library policies, and to recognize and respond effectively to challenges to access.
“Defending Access with Confidence: A Practical Workshop on Intellectual Freedom” is available from the ALA Order Department, 1-866-746-7252. Price is $60 with discounts for ALA and PLA members. For more information contact the PLA office at 1-800-545-2433, ext. 5PLA or
