Advocacy pre-conferences target beginning, seasoned library

supporters including trustees, Friends and public librarians

Chicago - ALA members and library supporters can chose from an array of three advocacy pre-conferences that target beginning and seasoned supporters, including trustees, Friends and public librarians. The pre-conferences will be held on Friday, June 24, at the Sheraton Chicago Hotel & Towers, 301 East North Water Street, prior to the ALA Annual Conference.

The Advocacy Institute, scheduled from 9 a.m. until 3:30 pm, will focus on the beginning library advocate. Organizers believe that the program will be meaningful to academic, school, public and special librarians. Attendees will learn to build a community of support for their libraries, as well as develop strategies for dealing with library issues specific to their communities. The Advocacy Institute is coordinated by the Carol A. Brey-Casiano Presidential Committee, The Public Awareness Committee, and The Association for Library Trustees and Advocates (ALTA), The Chapter Relations Committee, The Committee on Legislation and Friends of Libraries USA. The Advocacy Institute is the recipient of the 2004 World Book Goal Award. A $10 registration fee for both members and non-members will help offset lunch expenses.

Sponsored by ALTA, "Grassroots Library Advocacy: Creating Raving Fans," is geared toward the seasoned library advocate. Attendees will practice delivering key messages, learn how to develop a comprehensive team and create an action plan. The program runs from 9 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. Ticket price is $150.

The Public Library Association (PLA) will present "Creating A Library Sales Force: It' s Easier than You Think!" The training, which will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., will discuss how the PLA @your library® Smartest Card campaign can target its most important audiences: library staff, trustees and Friends.
Attendees will learn how to be informed and persuasive advocates for their library services and will be given the tools to create their own Library Sales Force back home.
Word-of-mouth marketing campaigns will be emphasized. Advance tickets for PLA member are $125; $180 for ALA members; $235 for non-members. Onsite ticket prices increase by $50.

Participants in all three pre-conferences will come together for a joint lunch session with a guest speaker. More details will be released soon.
