AASL presents preconference for school library media collections

CHICAGO - The American Association of School Librarians (AASL), a division of the American Library Association (ALA), will present “ Resource Alignment Begins with Collection Development: A Hands-On Approach, ” a preconference workshop during the ALA Annual Conference in Chicago.

This preconference, presented by Karen R. Lowe of the Northwest Regional Education Service Alliance, will be held on Friday, June 24, 2005, 1 – 4 pm. This hands-on, working session is designed to demonstrate a step-by-step procedure for analyzing, weeding, and building the school library media collection, utilizing guidelines set by the state curriculum. Participants will learn to identify resources that will aid in elimination of unusable materials, as well as isolate weaknesses in curriculum support and prioritize gaps based on areas of most critical need. The session will provide strategies for developing a five-year resource development plan, including preparation of a five-year budget proposal to obtain needed resources.
