World Book – ALA Goal Grant recipients named

“Leaders of the Pack: Bringing up the Next Generation of Library Leaders through LAMA” is the winning proposal for the 2003 World Book - American Library Association (ALA) Goal Grant. The $10,000 grant, donated by World Book Inc., is given to ALA units for the advancement of public, academic or school library service and librarianship through the support of programs that implement the goals and priorities of ALA.

LAMA will partner with New Member Round Table (NMRT), Library Support Staff Interest Round Table (LSSIRT), ALA’s Office for Diversity and the council of LAMA Affiliates (COLA) to identify 10 professional librarians or paraprofessionals who have the potential to be future library leaders; subsidize their attendance at an ALA Midwinter Meeting and Annual Conference; and provide training, mentoring and networking opportunities, culminating in a two year leadership and management role on a LAMA committee.

The jury believes that LAMA’s proposal is the most thoughtful, tightly aligns to ALA goals and objectives, involves a broad constituency, is designed to produce tangible results and is outcomes based,” said chair Jian Liu.
“It has the potential to have a significant contribution to the field both in its leadership development but also as a model for other ALA divisions.
We are gratified by the way that LAMA plans to integrate the program into ALA's professional meetings and the clear commitment of the association, on many levels, to this project.”

The World Book ALA Goal Award will be presented will be Tuesday,
June 24, during the ALA/CLA joint Annual Conference in Toronto.
