2003 Mary V. Gaver Scholarship winner named

The American Library Association (ALA) is pleased to announce that Shellie Rae Parkhill, New York City, is the recipient of the 2003 Mary V. Gaver Scholarship.

The $3,000 scholarship was established to honor the memory of Gaver, a past ALA president and Rutgers University professor, who made many contributions to library youth services. The scholarship is awarded to a person pursuing a master’s degree in library and information studies, with a specialty in youth services.

Parkhill will be attending the University of Kentucky.

Parkhill remembers fondly “her” public librarian telling her she could check out up to 99 books.
For her first job, she worked as a clerk where she was able to check out up to 99 books for the next generation of children.
Parkhill wants to work as a children’s librarian, and hopes to use her skills to inspire children to visit and love libraries as she does.

Parkhill was recognized in June during the ALA Annual Conference in Toronto.
